The labour sector of Muvattupuzha is known mainly through Beedi manufacturing industry. A Number of Beedi manufacturing units were born, grew, flourished and wrecked here. While a long row of workers engaged in Beedi rolling, trade union workers used to sit beside them and read newspapers and magazines to enlighten and educate them politically and also to make the work pleasant.

Such dramatic occasions often appear in the mirror of mind of old generation. The first labour strike registered in the history of Muvattupuzha was in the beedi industry. The weaving industry had a pride of place in Kadathy, Ambalampady area. The melody of spindles and looms was music to the local people. When Handloom industry decayed that music too vanished. The story of Handloom brings to light another very important social movement initiated in Muvattupuzha, the Hindu Mission established for the upliftment of Harijans. It was a glaring social revolution at a time the social untouchability and cast discrimination was at its highest peaks. To save the down trodden a few people from the upper classes formed the Hindu Mission to impart with primary education to Harijans and train them in handloom industry as a mean for livelihood.
