When there were no bridges and the town was separated by the River at the northern side, in 1906, a school was started and it is the Town UP School. The pupils who had to go to the Satrakunnu School for Higher education had to cross the river by country boats. The upper class students were allotted with special seats in the boats. There was girls high school at the old ‘Anchal office Junction’ in the building owned by Konattu Ittan Pillai where boys also were admitted at the primary level. The building was named as Ramangalam Bungalow. In front of this bungalow, the ‘Sankhumudra’, the royal logo was exhibited for which the owner had to tender apologies and present gifts to the king. |

Up to 1925, there were no high schools in Muvattupuzha. There was an English Middle School at the place the Nirmala High School is situated at present. To tide over this crisis Pittappillil Uthup Vaidyan contributed the land for a school and raised the necessary funds for the construction of the building. Thus the ‘Sreemoola Vilasam’ English high school came into existence. It is an unforgettable event in the history of Muvattupuzha for which Vaidyan should be honored forever. It is fantastic to learn that Uthup Vaidyan had to fight a lot of litigations to realize the amount promised by donors. The NSS high school at the top of Velloorkunnam hills has a humble history to reveal. MP Manmathan established this school. PS Achuthan Pillai and P.Padmanabhan Nair donated the site for this school. The School was started in a temporary shed. The first batch of the students were aged at par or even more than the headmaster of the school, MP Manmathan. With the help and co-operation of them Manmathan, who was very principled, Staged ‘Kathaprasangam’ in the streets and arranged the bare necessary funds for the school. The St.Augustines Girls High School at Muvattupuzha, the only girl’s high school here, deserves particular reference. It is an institution running at sound levels. To mention about the products of these school that belongs to the younger generation there is no room in this short review. With the rise of Nirmala College, which has already celebrated it golden Jubilee, the rural sector of Ernakulam district got an institution of higher learning. There are interesting stories of the father and children studying together in the same class in the first few years of its birth. Age difference and generation gap are no hurdles to the thirst for knowledge! |
